Pakistan Constitution Day

Letter April 11, 2018
The Constitution as a source to shed light on the running of state affairs has been somewhat dimmed

LAHORE: Pakistan Constitution Day was observed across the country on April 10, as on the same day in 1973, the Constituent Assembly of the country passed the Constitution that drafted not only the laws based on the fundamental ideological principles of the Islamic Republic but also enshrined the rights and duties of the nation towards the country.

As important a document like Constitution is to a nation, in Pakistan the same has so far been subjected to over dozens of amendments introduced by subsequent governments mainly to cater to their own political interests and benefits. With that, the standing of the Constitution as a source to shed light on the running of state affairs has been somewhat dimmed pertaining to the disputed clauses. For instance, devolution of power to the provinces is more than anything but a power struggle between the federation and the provincial authorities.

However, this year the event was marked by the promise to enhance the powers and the role of Senate and the protection of the rights of federating units. Hence, it can only be hoped that with the efforts and collective determination towards better coordination between the federation and the provinces, the issues between the two will be resolved.
