Bangladesh on a better judicial route

Bangladeshi institutions such as the judiciary and law-enforcement agencies have improved their performance

SHIKARPUR: On February 8th, Begum Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was handed a five-year jail term by the court. The opposition leader was found involved in a $250,000 corruption case in which she is believed to have siphoned off the money from the Zia Orphanage Trust. This is not only one case. Once, a former president was also caught for corrupt practices and sent to jail. Even Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rehman was jailed for 10 years in the past.

It seems that Bangladeshi institutions such as the judiciary and law-enforcement agencies have improved their performance. One wonders as to why Nawaz Sharif has not yet been sentenced to jail after the Panama Papers verdict proved his family’s involvement in massive corruption.
