Women’s right to vote

Letter March 28, 2018
Pakistan cannot progress unless it involves all members of its society to actively play their due role

KARACHI: With the general elections approaching ever closer, the country’s political atmosphere is rapidly changing. While political outfits are busy in mudslinging and flinging as much dirt as possible on their rivals, many in the country are even unaware of their right to vote as enshrined in the Constitution. And women voters who form a key segment of society, especially in the rural areas of the country, are still not given ‘permission’ by their male relatives to vote. And in instances when they are ‘allowed’, they are forced to vote for the parties the men in their house support.

In view of these issues, it becomes important for the political parties to set aside their problems for a while and work towards enabling men and women to avail of their right to vote. Welfare organisations should also hold door-to-door campaigns and educate people on their right to vote. Because Pakistan cannot progress unless it involves all members of its society to actively play their due role.
