Power show

Letter March 25, 2018
It’s time people started critically thinking about the parties they plan to vote for

KARACHI: As the establishment showed its might during the Pakistan Day parade held on March 23rd in Islamabad, the civilian leadership held their power show in provincial capitals such as Karachi and Lahore. But the irony was not lost on anyone when Karachi boasted of light décor spread over tall buildings and across roads, while the masses usually spend their days in the dark owing to the frequent load-shedding. In fact, the dancing fountain show held in the newly-built Bahria Town Karachi also seemed like a mockery of the poor who go without water for days or resort to using contaminated water.

Things were no different in Lahore when the Minar-e-Pakistan was lit and fireworks surrounded it, polluting the air in a city that only recently experienced its worst spell of smog. The fact that neither of the provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab thought twice before partaking in the celebrations of Pakistan day, goes on to show how much they care about the wellbeing of their so-called voters.

Political parties in the country care little about the people they are supposedly serving and care more about the power show that fuels their pockets. It’s time people started critically thinking about the parties they plan to vote for. A little retrospection can go a long way.
