Setting a precedent

Letter March 23, 2018
It is significant for TV anchors to act responsibly

ISLAMABAD: The three-month ban placed Shahid Masood’s talk show by the Supreme Court is a step in the right direction, as it will warn many other TV anchors who in the name of information serve a lot of garbage to the masses in the country. Dr Masood made tall claims that the accused in the Zainab murder case was part of a child pornographic ring that is backed by politicians from the ruling party and held accounts in foreign banks. However, he failed to provide a shred of evidence to back his claims.

Such a controversy spread by the anchorperson during a time when the country was asking for justice for Zainab and perhaps for the first time was having an open discourse on sexual abuse, had diverted everyone’s attention to a false narrative.

Talk shows in the country are watched by millions of people, especially those who belong to the middle-class segment of society and hold the power to make or break the democratic setup of the country, which is why it is significant for TV anchors to act responsibly.
