Is Karachi really cheap?

Letter March 19, 2018
For its locals it is only getting more expensive to live in by the day

KARACHI: Karachi has been ranked as sixth from the bottom out of 133 cities on the Worldwide Cost of Living report, making it one of the cheapest cities to live in, in the world. However, the growing class disparity in the city only paints a different picture.

If you have lived in the city for over five years, you will easily be able to identify the increase in the number of beggars on the streets and an increase in slum dwellings and shanty towns. Moreover, the unchecked increase in inflation, especially stemming from an increase in petrol and diesel prices, cannot be ignored. As a result, keeping these factors in view, Karachi may be one of the cheapest cities for those living in other countries but for its locals it is only getting more expensive to live in by the day.
