What our textbooks teach

Letter May 10, 2011
Our curriculum should encourage our children to speak the truth, respect elders, cooperate with one another and so on.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Raza Rumi’s article of May 8 titled “What are we teaching our children?”

Every country has a little bias in their textbooks. This helps them to create an impetus in citizens towards nationalism. Surely Israeli textbooks will not teach Israeli children the truth about the 2006 Lebanon war. And Indian textbooks will be economical with the truth on Kashmir. Rather than ‘correcting’ our history books, we should establish a curriculum where reading is promoted as a hobby. This is more important because over half of our children cannot read or write. So our curriculum should encourage our children to speak the truth, respect elders, cooperate with one another and so on.
