Society as the safe space

Letter March 11, 2018
It is about time that women claimed all that they are denied the right to and make society their ‘safe space’

KARACHI: On March 8th, the city of Karachi saw over a hundred women moving out of the socially deemed ‘safe space’ of their homes, to question society as to why every place is not considered to be a ‘safe space’ for them. In fact, who has categorised activities as ‘appropriate’ or ‘inappropriate’ for men or women? The Aurat March held on the day not only in Karachi but Islamabad and Lahore too discarded some of the deeply ingrained social perceptions about perpetrators and victims of abuse and harrasment, when victims of sexual abuse came on stage and shared their stories of abuse in front of a massive crowd and blatantly thrashed the idea of a victim staying silent while simultaneously encouraging others to choose courage over silence.

It is about time that women claimed all that they are denied the right to and make society their ‘safe space’.
