Not all is good

Letter March 11, 2018
Pakistan will experience an increase in trade activities and other benefits with the development of Gwadar port

KARACHI: Of late, the Chinese authorities and media has been claiming and portraying the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative for South and Central Asia as the gateway to development and economic progress via more prospects for trade and exchange among these countries. While the benefits and offered prospects cannot be denied, the OBOR does come with some costs for these countries, albeit not all of them monetary in nature.

Similarly, in Pakistan’s case, the country will experience an increase in trade activities and other benefits with the development of Gwadar port. However, the possible rise in Chinese nationals working in Pakistan and the Chinese currency being used in the region, are few among the many factors that would be categorised as the cons for Pakistan’s engagement with the project.
