Awaiting completion of reconstruction

Letter March 11, 2018
Twelve years after the catastrophic earthquake of 2005, survivors and victims still wait for reconstruction

PESHAWAR: Twelve years after the catastrophic earthquake of 2005, survivors and victims still wait for the reconstruction work to be completed. Time and again, media reports have highlighted the prolonged delay in completion of the work, despite billions being received in aid and funding from local and international donors. Hence, financial factors are certainly not the reason for the delay but the negligence and incompetence of the provincial authorities who in a bid to launch more and more of new projects have almost left the previous ones unfinished.

Apparently, it is the delay in release of funds that has not only left the locals of the earthquake-ravaged areas in a miserable condition but also increased the cost for the same by more than double of the initial figures. Law and educational reforms, which are the prime focus of the K-P government are equally important but not at the cost of ravaged infrastructure of the region.
