Equal rights for transgender people

Letter March 09, 2018
The bill moved by two senators from the Peoples Party is indeed commendable

ISLAMABAD: The Senate on March 7th adopted a bill unanimously on the protection of the rights of transgender persons. The bill moved by two senators from the Peoples Party is indeed commendable, also because it does not only ensure protection of their basic rights but also talks of initiatives for social and economic development of the community, for instance, establishing vocational training institutions.

As the bill has also prescribed imprisonment of up to six months for compelling any transgender people to beg on the roads, it is important that transgender people themselves too are discouraged from begging and encouraged to apply for employment opportunities the bill would provide, as hoards of transgender people are commonly seen on roads as beggars.
