Healthcare for all

Letter March 04, 2018
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has devised a strategy to help with healthcare of it's people

PESHAWAR: Healthcare in remote rural areas is a luxury. While some locals themselves do not want to visit doctors, others often do not have the option to do so as there are minimal facilities available to cater to their needs. However, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has devised a strategy to help people in need. The province has launched a pilot project, the ‘family physician’ programme that will initially be available only for six months.

The programme seeks to lessen the burden on tertiary healthcare facilities as the project will see a registered general physician operate at a rural health centre or a basic health unit at the union council level to treat patients. For now it has only been launched in two districts of K-P. This project will make it easier for the common people to consult a doctor, who will also register details of their family history. And if necessary will refer them to a tehsil or district headquarters hospital with a referral note mentioning reasons for referring patients. This is a commendable  initiative and should be made available in other districts as well.
