Improving female labour force participation

Report further highlights the disparity among men and women in public administration service departments

ISLAMABAD: A recent report released by the UNDP on women’s participation in workforce entitled ‘Gender Equality in Public Administration’ regards social factors as the major reason for women having a limited number of career and work options, and their limited participation in civil services. The report further highlights the disparity among men and women in public administration service departments. The root cause of which however lies in deeply ingrained social perceptions of our conservative patriarchal society that connotes certain careers with a specific gender. Deviations from these are not appreciated, and result in waste of skills and benefits female participations can bring.

Moreover, when women do opt for degree programmes that are primarily seen as male-dominated ones many never make it to the work field owing to their social constraints. Similar is the case of civil services and public-sector jobs, where the nature of work is falsely deemed one too demanding for females.
