Putting lives at risk

For a long time now, unqualified medics have been engaging in medical and surgical treatments

LAHORE: A news report in this paper highlights the plight of the masses in Punjab whose health are at risk owing to the growing number of quacks in the province that have the approval of doctors they work for, in return for a nominal free.

For a long time now, unqualified medics have been engaging in medical and surgical treatments that often turn out to be fatal. Over the years, the network has only grown and despite crackdowns, the provincial government has not been able to entirely eliminate them. Quacks still exist not just in Punjab but across the country, partially due to the perception of a certain section of the population that still believes them to be more appropriate, approachable and affordable compared to the medical services offered in private and public hospitals. Such a mindset needs to be changed and efforts should be made to do that.
