Karachi operation

Letter March 03, 2018
The operation has led to the much-needed stability and peace in the metropolis.

KARACHI: There is no denying the fact that Karachi operation that began in 2014 has borne some fruit. The operation has led to the much-needed stability and peace in the metropolis. However, the operation has come with some repercussions too such as enforced disappearances that are allegedly conducted by law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) in the city. On top of that owing to the operation and controversies that have spiralled against LEAs, a general atmosphere of fear has been created among Karachiites. This makes it difficult for them to reach out to LEAs about concerns they may have in relation to the security situation in their vicinity.

Considering the aforementioned, the chief of army staff’s recent statement stating that the operation will “continue to maintain normalcy” is a cause of concern. While there no compromise should be made in keeping the city safe, there is also a need to end the atmosphere of fear. The LEAs should make efforts to connect with people and make themselves appear reachable. Such an attitude will benefit them and their operation in the future.
