Genetic disorders

Major reason for inherited disorders is intra-family marriages

KARACHI: Marriage between cousins is a common practice in some Muslim societies and in Pakistan too, parents often prefer to get their children married to their cousins. However, numerous studies have proven that such marriages lead to genetic disorders that are detrimental to children who are conceived as a result.

A recent press conference held at Indus Hospital, Karachi, also highlighted this aspect citing that a major reason for inherited disorders is intra-family marriages. To save our future generations from such disorders, it becomes increasingly important for the state to collaborate with hospitals and raise awareness against cousin marriages. And in case families want to go ahead with the idea, they should be expected to take tests that can determine whether their children born in the future will have any genetic disorders.
