Recognising Taliban as stakeholders

Letter March 01, 2018
It is important that, the US approach and policy too towards the country is aligned to that of the Afghan government

LAHORE: The Afghan president has recognised at last the Afghan Taliban as a legitimate political entity. With that, the ever in-pending peace talks and the process is likely to pick up pace and the conflicting parties are likely to find a common ground for the resolution of the conflict.

The Taliban, although an unrecognised and unofficial stakeholder, has long remained an important part of the political and social structure of Afghanistan, they have been denied their role in forming and shaping the political future of the country.

It is important that, the US approach and policy too towards the country is aligned to that of the Afghan government. As previously, an increase in air strikes in the country irked not only the Afghan Taliban but also the common people and increased suspicion over the US’ resolve and intention toward the peace process.
