CII’s decision on marriages

Letter March 01, 2018
it is pointless to set an age limit for the ceremonial practice of ‘rukhsati’ and not for nikah

KARACHI: According to a news report, the Council on Islamic Ideology (CII) shall allow the solemnising of nikah at any age. This means that there is likely to be no age limit or requirement for solemnising a nikah. However, the minimum age for ‘rukhsati’ is said to be 18 years. However, even though an official decision has not been made by the CII as of yet, it is important to take into account the fact that nikah is not only a ceremonial ritual but rather entitles one as another person’s spouse and is equivalent to marriage.

Therefore, the practice effects and influences a person psychologically and mentally. Hence, it is pointless to set an age limit for the ceremonial practice of ‘rukhsati’ and not for nikah, which practically constitutes an act of marriage between two people.
