Leaving Balochistan behind

Letter March 01, 2018
Over the last few decades successive governments have neglected the province

QUETTA: In a recent report by a not-for profit and non-governmental organisation working in the education reform sector, Balochistan province has fared poorly among policy priorities of the incumbent government. Over the last few decades successive governments have neglected the province, despite being a rich and abundant contributor of natural resources. Although governments’ prime focus in the region, if any, has been to improve the law and order situation, it is pertinent to note that while the condition has worsened, other development sectors like education and infrastructure have been completely neglected altogether.

Further, if benefits of the CPEC initiative are to be counted as beneficial to the development in the province, let us not forget that the impact of it is limited to a certain geographical area of the province only and not to the majority of the severely deprived population of Balochistan.
