Public hangings

Letter February 23, 2018
The practice can be carried out on jail premises

LAHORE: In the wake of rapidly increasing cases of child sexual abuse, the public has of late begun clamouring for public hangings of culprits. The practice was reportedly implemented during General Ziaul Haq’s regime in Pakistan and is seen in alignment with the Sharia laws. However, recently, disagreement between the concerned ministry and departments surfaced over the matter during a meeting of the Senate committee on the interior.

But it is important to note that the practice has been viewed as creating an adverse psychological impact on the young minds instead. Not just that, living in an environment ravaged by killings, acts of terrorism and danger, it is important that public hangings are not held. The practice can be carried out on jail premises with the required number of witnesses present.
