Problematic priorities

Letter February 22, 2018
Talk of Imran Khan’s third marriage was also taken up in the Senate recently

HYDERABAD: With the news of Imran Khan’s third marriage, the country’s social media platform and many news channels have gone into a frenzy so much so that they thought it fit to carry it as ‘breaking news’ in a country that is often plagued with violence. If news of an influential political leader’s marriage manages to become the lead story, one can only imagine the state of journalism in the country. Such media outlets thought it to be appropriate to give such prominence to this news, while at the same time Pakistan is being named as the worst place to be born in with a high infant mortality rate.

Not only are most of our women malnourished but our increasingly high mortality rate shows that we are not making the country any better for our future generations either. And all this is forgotten in the wake of a news story that holds little significance to the crippling state of affairs of the country.

In fact, the talk of Imran Khan’s third marriage was also taken up in the Senate recently at a time when it was discussing important issues. If such is the attitude of our lawmakers and our mainstream media, then there is little surprise that Pakistan still struggles to develop.
