Lacking incentives to return

Letter February 21, 2018
At the same time, the standard of higher education should be raised

ISLAMABAD: As per the figures given to the Senate Standing Committee on federal education and professional training, 428 students sent abroad for higher education, precisely MS and PhD programmes, have been declared absconders for various reasons. Among these the most common ones are students who do not return to the country upon completion of their studies.

The situation explains well the case of poor quality of higher education in the country, where local universities primarily focus on making money with below the par research standards. Scholars who manage to go abroad never return due to the lack of incentives to come back and serve their country.

As this is a blatant misuse of the scholarships offered by the HEC, stricter rules must be implemented to ensure that the students return to the country and serve it for the required period. At the same time, the standard of higher education should be raised.
