Pakistan Railways has been neglected for a long time and it is being treated as a nationalised industry.
LONDON: This is with reference to Amer Z Durrani’s article in two parts (May 5 and 6) titled “The state of Pakistan Railways”.
With reference to what the writer says in the beginning of the article, one only has to look at the turnaround achieved by Indian Railways over the last decade. For any business unit to function and achieve profitability, things like competition, pricing, quality and efficiency have to be taken into account.
Pakistan Railways has been neglected for a long time and it is being treated as a nationalised industry. The situation now is that the level of capital investment required for a network upgrade and rolling stocks and so on far outweighs the revenue earned by the actual traffic of goods and passengers.
