Is it legal detention?

Letter February 18, 2018
We should expect rights groups to act against her detention, force the police to release her and her child

KARACHI: The recent arrest of a pregnant woman and her three-year-old child in lieu of her husband by the police in Sukkur encapsulates the plight of vulnerable women in our society. The detained woman’s spouse is wanted in connection with a homicide case. Not only did the woman’s child fall ill in the detention centre but there was no medication provided to the child. When media persons tried to visit her cell she was moved to another place out of the reach of the media.

A senior police official later claimed that the woman in question was placed in protective custody at her own request. Who exactly are they kidding? We should expect rights groups to act against her detention and force the police to release her and her child.
