A report on women by the UN reflects upon the dismal state of women issues and gender equality in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A report on women by the UN reflects upon the dismal state of women issues and gender equality in Pakistan. The report, which is a part of the UN Development Agenda 2030, measures the economic and social improvement in the life standards of women through the matrix of child marriages, education, healthcare and employment.

Along with disappointing statistics in nine out of 10 SDGs, obstacles faced in meeting basic daily needs like finding fuel wood for cooking purpose and fetching water for consumption have also been highlighted. The aforementioned issues, as a matter of fact, stand afar from other common issues women across the country face. However, the rural populace has emerged to be more vulnerable to it.

Moreover, currently, sexual abuse and harassment stands as the issue almost every woman happens to experience at least once in her lifetime. Hence, it becomes meaningless to talk of education and employment when the basic right of safe and protected life cannot be guaranteed.
