KARACHI: A recent report on the Karachi Central Jail in this paper had offered in-depth insight into terrorist activities and networks that are operating from within the premises of the facility. Yet it is impossible for terrorist groups to function within and from jails without the covert support of the higher authorities, as it is clearly not only due to loopholes in the security system of the jail. Hence, the correctional facilities jails are meant to be are actually breeding grounds for criminal and terrorist activities.
Moreover, as the jail has some of the high-profile criminals imprisoned, located in the centre of the city, in the crowded and buzzing vicinity of Jail Road (named after the central jail), the jail’s security has caused inconvenience for nearby localities, as traffic too gets disrupted on numerous occasions due to VIP movements. Alongside there is a multiplied risk of terrorist attacks and threats. In the wake of these issues, it important that not only is the jail security improved but the authorities should also get a hold of the prisoners assisting and running militant groups from the jail.
