Karachi Zoo

Letter February 06, 2018
Unless the authorities concerned realise the importance of animal rights

KARACHI: The improvement project of Karachi Zoo has suffered a delay of about 18 months, only to be met with disapproval by a team of zoological experts. This was reported in a recent news story in this paper, and it doesn’t come as a shock given the already dismal performance of the Sindh government in anything related to the improvement of the city. The provincial government has not only delayed major projects but has also been unable to improve the state of infrastructure of the metropolis.

However, in the case of zoos in the city, the situation is even worse. The animals kept in cages in the zoological garden located in the vicinity of Saddar are in a miserable condition. They are not kept in big enclosures and live in an environment that is far away from their natural habitat. The administration of the zoo made little effort to provide them with an environment that is close to their natural ones.

On the other hand, they are not accommodated in accordance with the changing weather conditions, especially during the summer season. In the past few years, temperatures in the city become nearly unbearable in summer months. However, while measures have been taken to facilitate human life, little has been done for the animals in the zoo. It is little wonder then that animals die during the season almost on a yearly basis.

Unless the authorities concerned realise the importance of animal rights, little change is expected.
