Lobbying for justice

Letter February 01, 2018
Until then, the dream of a desired change will remain a pipedream

LARKANA: This is in response to the article titled ‘Self-righteous anger over Kasur’ by Dr Shenila Khoja-Moolji, published in this newspaper on January 18th. The fabric of our society is not as tarnished as it has been painted by the writer.

Inhuman acts of rape and murder committed by few cannot be and should not be used to paint the whole society with the same brush. The Kasur case does not define our national character as a nation. The condemnatory literature/material published in national newspapers and uploaded on social networking sites like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter, etc, as well as the collective response to the Kasur tragedy all over the country have shaken our collective conscience.

The elephant in the room is a ‘reactive strategy’ that we have cultivated over the years. Had there been no Kasur tragedy, the writer would have not dilated on the ills in question prevalent in our society.

In a country where the government is unwilling to deliver and is unresponsive, it is the responsibility of writers, readers, media and civil society to regularly pressure the government for the solution of such pressing issues. It is we who have to pressure our government to improve poor governance and give teeth to the laws related to child abuse and other crimes. Until then, the dream of a desired change will remain a pipedream.
