Shrill cry for justice

Letter February 01, 2018
Incidents of women being raped, assaulted or murdered have become a routine happening now

LAHORE: From #MeToo to #JusticeforZainab and now #JusticeforAsma, one after the other incidents reflecting a woman’s plight and helplessness in our society are occurring, only to raise a cry that is bound to go unheard. Despite sustained calls for justice, there is no end to such cases where in the first place a woman’s right to speak up is never acknowledged. Second, when she does speak up and defy what is being imposed upon her, it only leads to her being silenced forever. The most recent case is of a medical student from Kohat, Asma Rani, who was shot dead by a man named Mujahid Afridi when she turned down his proposal for marriage.

Incidents of women being raped, assaulted or murdered have become a routine happening now. To control such cases alongside a strong legal system, a change of the mindset is equally needed. The change that teaches man to admit and respect a woman’s right to choose for herself whatever she wishes to and whichever way she wishes to.
