Police can stop the brutal killing of birds by strengthening law enforcement
WAHI PANDHI: Over the last few years, there has been no letdown in the hunting of precious birds and animals in Sindh. Our political leaders would rather violate the laws of the country just to secure the favour of elite and powerful families in the Gulf. This is done at the cost of wildlife.
When these migratory birds arrive in other countries, local and foreign tourists gather to see these birds and enjoy the beauty of nature. Yet when these birds enter Pakistan, they are hunted down as prize and killed for fun.
The truth is that local forestry officials and the police are shirking their responsibilities, because they can stop the brutal killing of birds by strengthening law enforcement. For a change, they can also stop the selling and buying of migratory birds in local markets and impose heavy fines on people indulging in such activities.
According to the wild animal protection law, anyone who catches, kills, sells, purchases, transports or carries wildlife under special state or local protection should be fined or prosecuted. Local officials can stop the killings if they implement the law strictly.
I call upon the Sindh government to take necessary measures to save these birds from hunters.
