Clash between student groups

Letter January 25, 2018
The ban on student unions imposed during Ziaul Haq’s government was lifted recently

LAHORE: After the dispute over giving Punjab University’s land to a religious seminary, the university is now beset by another internal row among its student chapters of various political parties. A clash between the student wings of the Islami Jamiat Tulba and the Pakhtun Baloch council turned the university into a battle ground when a clash between the two groups left over a dozen severely injured.

The ban on student unions imposed during Ziaul Haq’s government was lifted recently, as the role of these wings is considered important in making the young aware of democracy. Unfortunately, like the PU incident, student councils in universities engage in pursuing their clashing political agendas against one another, disrupting academic activities. However, the functioning of the unions should be to make the masses politically aware and engage them in the process.
