A war, indeed

Letter May 03, 2011
Whatever the US narrative on Osama bin Laden is, it is certain that much of the Muslim world does not believe it.

ISLAMABAD: Whatever the American narrative on Osama bin Laden is, it is certain that much of the Muslim world does not believe it. It is all but obvious that Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda , Mullah Omer’s Taliban, Tahir Yuldashev’s Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Ahmad Yasin’s Hamas, Abu Sayyaf’s Harkat ul Islamiyah, to name a few, are reactionary movements to the imperial foreign policy pursued by western nations in the Muslim world.

Obama may try to cast these movements as enemies of humanity but the fact remains that, for many in the Muslim world, these are resistance movements. Also, even if Osama bin Laden was behind the deaths of 3,000 Americans, what about the fact that many thousands more died in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of America’s actions? By and large, the US has attacked and bombed countries that have Muslim majority populations, so for the US president to say that his nation is “not and never will be at war” with Islam or the Muslim world is incorrect.
