LAHORE: When Musharraf suspended the constitution he claimed that he did it in the national interest. For the next eight years, the dictator’s regime handed over hundreds of Pakistanis to the US, apparently all in the national interest. This was followed by the killing of Nawab Bugti in a military operation, the Lal Masjid fiasco, the May 12 Karachi killings, the National Reconciliation Ordinance, and all of these, the general said, were in the national interest.
Now Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain would like us to believe that he has decided to extend his support to the PPP-led coalition government in the national interest and that this has nothing to do with either Moonis Elahi’s case, or the temptation to be in power.
