Climate change and economic development

Letter December 30, 2017
The country should participate in global initiatives

SHIKARPUR: Pakistan is among the many countries that face the daunting challenge of climate change. Despite using eight per cent of its total GDP, Pakistan is still bearing the brunt of the threats of climate change.

The climate change problems are multiple ranging from receding glaciers, which could reduce water levels in water resources permanently, to famine, drought and internal and external migrations. The main reason is that the state has yet not recognised climate change as a serious issue that needs urgent action. But it is clear that the threats emanating from climate change are one of the chief causes of an unstable economic growth. If neglected, it will adversely affect Pakistan’s economic growth and objectives that are being sought under CPEC. Pakistan should consider the issue with all seriousness that it warrants. The country should participate in global initiatives, including the Paris Agreement which is aimed at controlling the looming disastrous consequences of climate change.
