Responsibility to vote

Letter December 29, 2017
The recent registration exercise of the ECP is also likely to get a significant number of women registered for voting

LAHORE: It is admirable that the Election Commission of Pakistan has started the verification process for 7.3 million NIC holders to put them on electoral rolls so that they can be identified as eligible voters. The exercise would certainly add accuracy to the polling process, however, registering the voters for electoral rolls is unlikely to bear any fruit until and unless the registered realise the responsibility and the importance every single vote holds.

A few days ago, during the local government by-poll in Dir District, not a single woman out of some 20,000 registered female voters could cast her vote. The recent registration exercise of the ECP is also likely to get a significant number of women registered for voting. In the wake of these issues, it is important that not just the locals of the region but the women as well be made aware of their right and the responsibility to cast a vote as a citizen of the country.
