Foreign policy

Letter December 26, 2017
It is going to be a task for Pakistan to not ally its interests with the US

KARACHI: A couple of days ago, at a conference titled The Challenges of Terrorism and Inter-Regional Connectivity, Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani hinted at the possibility of the formation of a US, India and Israel nexus in the making. The trilateral alliance will certainly undermine Pakistan’s standing in the region, given that lately the US administration has been blaming Pakistan for providing safe havens to terrorists.

Moreover, reports of Pakistan pursuing an independent foreign policy while moving away from a US-centric one, have also been making rounds in the media. However, for a country like Pakistan, it is near impossible to pursue an independent foreign policy overnight. Being bogged down in America’s war against terrorism and relying on funding to keep the operations running are just few of the many aspects that depict the tangled US-Pakistan relationship, one from which neither can drift away easily.

More than the US, it is going to be a task for Pakistan not to ally its interests with the US, not just in terms of trade but politically and militarily as well.
