UN vote and Trump’s intransigence

Letter December 23, 2017
The UN has rejected the US’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem

KARACHI: Voicing the verdict of the majority of the global community, the UN has rejected the US’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem. The decision was opposed by a majority vote of 128 countries, which if nothing, defines how unjustified is the US’s stance on the matter, yet as the UN’s resolutions stand legally non-binding upon the member states, the opposed decision might do little for the reversal of the US’s move.

Jerusalem recognition: JI calls for financial boycott of US

As, the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, stated, “America will put our embassy in Jerusalem, no vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that.” The statement reflects the importance countries place upon the UN as a global mediatory body and how the US and other powerful states continue to influence the voting and the resolution process over important matters while completely disregarding the voice of the majority.
