Disappointing role of parliamentarians

Letter December 20, 2017
Let our political parties spell out in simple terms what they have to offer to the common people

RAWALPINDI: A review of the outgoing year would reflect that our media and Parliament have not debated enough on the real issues. Parliamentarians and political figures remained engaged in character assassination of one another by name-calling, or open derision of one another. Keeping aside the basic political acumen most politicians here do not even understand common parliamentary and economic terms. Further, the essence of democracy lies in accepting and being respectful of the opinion of the opponent and not to defend oneself by resorting to personal remarks against the other.

We are nearing the next general elections. Let our political parties spell out in simple terms what they have to offer to the common people in terms of basic facilities — education, healthcare, shelter, civic facilities and so on. And how they would protect the rights of the people, and promote peaceful coexistence between the majority and the minorities.
