Sugarcane growers’ protest

Letter December 13, 2017
PPP used the same tactic on December 11, against the protestors over a lesser issue in nature than Faizabad protest

KARACHI: Not quite long ago, the PPP slammed the PML-N over the use of force against the Faizabad protestors, however the PPP itself used the same tactic on December 11, against the protestors over a lesser issue in nature than the Faizabad protest.

Sugarcane growers protested near the party office, Bilawal House in Karachi, for not being paid the approved rate of Rs180/kg for the sugarcane produce, by the government. Demonstrators also alleged the ownership of 19 major sugar mills in Sindh by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zaradri as the cause of the trouble, due to which the agriculture ministry is unable to help farmers receive the initially approved rate.

Protestors were dispersed through the use of batons and water cannons by the police. The government should address the concerns of sugarcane farmers and ensure payment for the produce as per the approved rate.
