Confrontational approach

Letter December 13, 2017
Rana Sanaullah blatantly refused to resign, saying that only the party head, Nawaz Sharif, can ask for his resignation

LAHORE: Khadim Hussain Rizvi and his protégé Ashraf Jalili, after the resignation of federal law minister Zahid Hamid, are demanding the resignation of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. The provincial law minister, however, blatantly refused to resign, saying that only the party head, Nawaz Sharif, can ask for his resignation.

The minister’s response to the demands for his resignation has two sides. First, to uphold the law and the rules, only political authorities and the head of the state should have the right to demand resignations from ministers and parliamentarians over a misconduct.

Second, the law minister has once again adopted a confrontational course, refusing to resign in the face of the mounting pressure for his resignation. It may prove far more humiliating and rather subtly establish the unspoken dominance of the protest groups over the state. Hence, the party should think about a rational approach to deal with the situation while it still has time to play it safe.
