PESHAWAR: According to press reports, 1,000 primary schools have been shut down in K-P due to low enrolment rate. Despite the tall claims of the provincial government of having the highest literacy and school enrolment rate, cultural and social factors remain the first to cross one’s mind for closing down the schools.
According to the provincial education ministry, the reasons however are different but nonetheless a failure on the part of the K-P government. The report further states that the schools were established after issuance of directives by the chief minister and mostly the education ministry was ignored. Also, schools are not established keeping in mind the needs of an area and its population. Rather, they are established in accordance with the political expediency of the area MPAs and MNAs. Moreover, the buildings and playgrounds initially meant for schools are now likely to be occupied by land grabbers.
