Law of the Jungle

Letter December 07, 2017
Loopholes within laws and justice system allow culprits to slip out of investigation

KARACHI: The gun shooting incident of December 3rd in the posh locality of DHA Karachi is yet another reminder of the lawlessness and, by extension, of the preferential treatment suspects and accused in such cases receive at the hands of the police and other investigating officials. Loopholes within the laws and the justice system have subsequently allowed the culprits to slip out of investigations.

The case shares stark similarity with the Shahzeb Khan murder case of 2012, as the suspects in this case too have been charged with opening indiscriminate fire on the deceased. This highlights the ease with which arms and weapons are accessible to the general public, as it only takes a mere issuance of a licence without any proper vetting process for an individual to own a deadly weapon.

Unfortunately, the authorities are not just reluctant in implementing effective gun control laws but often back the influential involved in illegal weapon supplies and hoarding.
