MQM has sown political divisions among different sections in the province on the basis of linguistic differences
KARACHI: Recently, MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar gave a statement reiterating that his party “does not want to divide Sindh.” Taken at its face value, the statement of the MQM leader should be acknowledged, however, the past record of the political party though it is now under a different leadership tells a different story.
For long, the MQM has sown political divisions among different sections in the province on the basis of linguistic differences. The MQM’s politics for decades has revolved around Muhajir ethnicity and Urdu-speaking people in Sindh. Although it might be unfair to deny the injustices the Muhajir community has faced for long, political struggles should always strive for ethnic unity and not divide.
Further, not just the MQM, many political parties in Pakistan base their politics on the interests and desires of a certain religiously, linguistically or ethnically identified group and not all Pakistanis — as one united nation.
