KARACHI: According to a report in this news newspaper, one woman is killed every day in the name of honour in the province of Sindh. Moroever, according to a recent report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 2,500 cases of violence against women were reported in the year 2016 alone. The statistics were brought forward during the seminars and events conducted marking the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th. With the aforementioned figures, one can easily discern the magnitude of the incidents in which women in the country are subjected to violence. However, we should not forget that many cases also go unreported and numbers of those unidentified cases would certainly be higher.
But with the passing of the Sindh Commission on Status of Women Bill 2015 we can expect change. And to further the cause, last week an office was inaugurated to house the body to promote economic, social, legal rights and political emancipation of women. Previously, the Sindh Human Rights Commission and other governmental and non-governmental bodies were responsible for the cause, it is now expected that an authority solely dedicated to the purpose will be able to deliver much more than before, especially at a time when Pakistan has been ranked as the fourth-worst country in the world in terms of women’s rights, security, employment and education opportunities.
