Hanging our heads in shame

The case of a girl being paraded naked in DI Khan shows how low humans have stooped

QUETTA: The case of a girl being paraded naked in DI Khan shows how low humans have stooped and to what extent the structure of law and justice has been tarnished. With no consideration for moral values, which Pakistanis as a Muslim nation brag about, the girl was first stripped naked and paraded through crowded streets, and to make matters worse she was then allegedly forced by the police to give a false account of the horrific incident before a magistrate.

A parallel system of justice prevails in the northwest of the country known as the Jirga system, which the locals consider to be in line with the Sharia law. However, the decision of the Jirga to close the issue against a fine of Rs300,000 on the accused before it reached the court, leads one to question the existence of the parallel justice system.

As the matter has already garnered the attention of politicians, it is time that they took stringent action against the police officials involved, as well as the local Jirga system that continues to render more harm to society than good.
