KARACHI: This is in response to Morial Shah’s article titled ‘Words and violence’ published on November 23rd. Ms Shah has highlighted an issue that many, even in the educated and affluent class of the society would be unaware of. Something as simple as having words to explain what one goes through can be brutally difficult for some people.
Unfortunately, we often blame people especially women for not fighting for themselves enough to unchain the shackles they have been detained with by patriarchy. However, we forget that everyone have different experiences, depending on multiple aspects that may shape their narratives. Intersectionality plays a huge role. As Ms Shah has mentioned, not only is there a lack of words to express what an individual may be going through in one’s native language, but in fact some people do not even understand that they are being wronged.
