Killing in the name of Islam

Letter November 27, 2017
Governments of countries that have been attacked by these militant groups should join forces to fight against them

RAWALPINDI: The deadly bomb and gun assault in a mosque in Egypt that has so far claimed 235 lives and has injured over a 100 people, is devastating. Though no group has yet claimed the attack, the Egyptian security forces have been fighting an Islamist insurgency in Sinai, where the attack took place, for years. On the other hand, considering that the militants affiliated with the Islamic State have also been behind many deadly attacks in the region before, either of the two militant groups can be behind the November 24th attack.

However, it is hard to understand how people who supposedly call themselves to be religious and protectors of Islam can hurt other human beings. The religion in itself advocates against bloodshed and considers murdering one human equivalent to that of killing the whole of humanity. An attack especially at a place of worship, irrespective of what religion it represents, is tantamount to the fact that the militants have no religious leaning. For years now, militant groups have been hiding behind the cloak of Islam, such as the IS or Boko Haram, and creating havoc to only further their personal agendas. Their fear and brutal attacks have only added more fire to the increasing Islamophobia.

Governments of countries that have been attacked by these militant groups should unite and join forces to fight against them.
