We pride on our sportsmen when they bring us international recognition
KARACHI: We pride on our sportsmen when they bring us international recognition but fail to support them when they truly need us. Boxing champion Muhammad Waseem is just another sportsman who is desperate for support but is being let down by his countrymen.
The World Boxing Council silver flyweight champion is considering surrendering his Pakistani nationality owing to the financial crisis he is facing. Earlier this month, Waseem had requested for sponsorship through a news story published in The Express Tribune but no one paid attention to his pleas.
In the wake of this, he is considering opting for Korean or US citizenship to keep his boxing career alive. It is unfortunate that despite the rising economic situation in the country which is bringing in loads of investment, not a single company is willing to sponsor Waseem. What is worse is that many ‘patriots’ are accusing Waseem of using a lack of sponsorship as an ‘excuse’ to surrender his nationality. Instead of criticising him, people should use their time and voice to find him sponsors to be able to make him play as a Pakistani national.
