Perween Rahman murder case

Letter November 23, 2017
It seems like a way out to grant suspects and absconders bail and set them free

KARACHI: It seems like a way out to grant suspects and absconders bail and set them free, for many of the unresolved cases or the ones the police fail to solve. In the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, suspects were released due to a lack of evidence, despite reports of them having confessed their involvement in the case. Investigations into the knife-attack cases in Karachi and parts of Punjab were also later closed as the police failed to arrest the perpetrator. Latest, in this list is the Perween Rahman case in which an accused absconder has been granted pre-arrest bail, although the suspect is yet to surrender before the anti-terrorism court for the case perusal.

However, the high-profile case of Perween Rahman’s murder must not be closed and justice must be served. This would help the justice system in Pakistan to regain peoples’ trust who often consider it to be a failing system. If a prime minister of the country can be held accountable then Perween’s case too should be strictly investigated.

Further, considering that the accused is a member of a well-known political party, the authorities should conduct investigations and award a verdict without succumbing to any political pressure or influence.
