ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Shahbaz Sharif’s statement where he has called for Karachi to be made a separate province. My first reaction to this is the proverb that people living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. The other is that don’t we have enough problems as it is for us to now open what could well be a Pandora’s box?
Surely the federal and provincial governments have plenty on their hands in terms of governance and related issues, why do they want to deal with new ones? If the issue is of strengthening the federation by greater autonomy, this could be achieved by following through devolution in a more comprehensive manner. We could replicate the National Finance Commission at lower levels of government so that the distribution of funds is devolved instead of its current centralised mode of existence.
